Exam session is finally here! During demanding weeks like these at varsity, our brains need all the boost it can get to stay focused. Since maintaining a properly nourished brain helps us study better and burn the midnight oil longer, here are my top five study snack suggestions:

  1. Bananas

This mega food is known to boost memory and concentration. It contains vitamin B6 which promotes the production of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Serotonin regulates mood and memory function, norepinephrine regulates stress and dopamine helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centre.

  1. Peanuts

Peanut butter also contains norepinephrine and dopamine as well as vitamin B12. The latter helps your body make red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout various organs including the brain. This in turn increases focus and mental clarity.

  1. Oatmeal

Instant oats are wholegrain meals that contain complex carbohydrates and soluble fibres. These nutrients release energy slowly and as a result, maintain concentration and sustain energy levels.

  1. Air Popped Popcorn

Popcorn in my opinion is the perfect food snack. It contains polyphenols, an antioxidant which helps elevate brain levels.

  1. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains antioxidant properties that combat cognitive decline and is a natural stimulant of caffeine which enhances focus. Dark chocolate also helps improve memory, alertness and clarity as it increases blood flow to the brain.
